Hair cream has come a long way since the 1920s. Initially, it was called brilliantine and style-conscious men used it to slick back and add serious shine to their hair, beards and moustaches.
But that shine came with a downside.
While brilliantine looked good, it had a serious design flaw: this stuff was so greasy it would rub off, staining clothes and furniture beyond repair.
Luckily, products have evolved since then.
Modern hair cream helps you achieve a fresh, natural look. A subtly powerful tool, it’s easy to use and makes dull hair look effortlessly well-groomed… without anyone figuring out your secret.
Hair cream is for casual looks and low-maintenance styles. So, your high-maintenance styles like spikes, mohawks, and pompadours (also known as pomps) are off the menu. But if you’re aiming for hair that moves easily and looks laid-back yet on point, cream is the way to go.
Styling cream is suitable for most hair types, including curls and waves. It even works wonders on coarser hair by softening it up and adding subtle, natural-looking shine.
Got thin or fine hair? Hit the hair cream to add texture and volume but go easy, as too much product will weigh thin hair down.
If your style is more laid-back and leisurely than ‘styled to the T’, you should add hair cream to your regime. It is great, because:
Hair cream is perfect for casual hairstyles and people who want to look groomed without putting in a ton of effort. It also works well on shorter haircuts like the high and tight or buzz cut.
As we’ve mentioned, hair cream isn’t going to do much for high-maintenance styles. But you should also consider another product if you:
This style is back on top after taking a breather for a few years.
What is the difference between hair cream and hair wax, then? The answer is simple: While wax is merely a styling aid, hair cream styles and nourishes hair. But there are some more differences between these products:
Hair Cream
Hair Wax
So, if you’re looking for a product that cares for your hair and is perfect for casual looks, hair cream should be your go-to choice.
Editor’s Tip: Rocking a relaxed style? Try our Understated Cream for an effortless look.
Or if you’re trying to add some texture to your ‘do, add some of our Texturizing Cream, which also adds a bit of shine.
Hair cream works best on dry hair, but you can also use it on damp, towel-dried hair. How much you need to use depends on your hair type and length, so get experimenting.
Before you start: When you’re using hair cream for the first time, try it on clean dry hair to help you gauge how much product you need and see how your hair and oils react to the product.
Begin with a fingertip amount of product. If you need more, go for it, especially if you have thicker or longer hair.
Rub the cream between your fingers to warm it up.
Top tip: Never add hair cream straight from the container to your hair — always warm it up first. It just applies easier, believe us.
Rake your fingers through the full length of your hair, starting from the roots, for full coverage.
Work the product through your hair a couple more times — the more even the distribution, the more natural the look.
If you started with damp hair, now’s the time to finish off with a hairdryer to achieve an even softer finish and add more body to your style.
If you started with dry hair, style as you like. Use a comb for a more defined look or just texture it up with your fingers.
Now you know. Hair cream is an amazing styling product. When you use it, you’re not only styling your hair but also nourishing it. Double whammy. Go out, rock that effortless ‘do, and try more new things.
