5 Powerful Tips to Improve Your Self-Esteem

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you look in the mirror? Are you your worst critic or can you give yourself a compliment or two? Whatever your answer is, that is the value you have given yourself.

What we think, we become, this is how self-esteem is developed. If someone repeatedly told you what a great job you’re doing, you’ll start to believe it. The same applies if you tell yourself, you’re worthless, you’ll start to believe that you’re not good enough to do anything.

The power is in your hands to make a change. Practice these 5 powerful tips and you’ll start to see a significant improvement in your self-esteem.

1. Make a list

It sounds odd, we know, but we’re not talking about just any list. Take the time to really think about who you are as a person and where your passions lie. List all of your strengths, your weaknesses, your goals and ambitions and even what you think you can improve on.

Once you’ve got your list sorted, read it. If cooking up a storm is your favourite thing to do, why not sign up for a cooking class? Or if you want to become more active, get a new gym contract. Spend more time and energy focusing on the things that you are good at, instead of telling yourself what you can’t do. When you are good at what you do and do what you love, your self-esteem heightens.

Remember, it’s okay to have weaknesses. No one is perfect. With a little bit of patience and trial and error, nothing is impossible to achieve.

2. Celebrate small wins

There’s no feeling quite like accomplishing something you couldn’t do before. Whether it be a small task or meeting a deadline, a win is a win. Celebrate these victories by treating yourself in the way you want to. You deserve to feel good about yourself.

When you start achieving things you couldn’t do before, you feel proud because #youdidthat. Taking risks doesn’t come easy, but the first step is always the hardest. Try telling yourself daily that you can do anything you put your mind to. Speak it into existence. You know you can!

Once you start to build up your self-esteem, acknowledge that failure is normal. In fact, it’s necessary. Think of the billionaires out there. They have all probably failed spectacularly in their lifetime, but that didn’t stand in the way of their success.

3. Stand up for yourself

Improving your self-esteem starts with you. When our self-esteem is low, we tend to be harder on ourselves when we’re only human. It’s up to you to turn that self-criticism into self-appreciation.

Picture this. How would you react if someone said something nasty to your mates or family member? Chances are you wouldn’t like it. So why is it okay to say it to yourself? The truth is, we tend to be more compassionate for others instead of ourselves, and that is where you need to flip the script.

Make it a habit to say one good thing about yourself a day. Do you like the way your hair is cut? Say it out loud. Do you think you look good in jeans? Praise yourselves kings. The only way to improve your self-esteem is to become your very own hype man.

4. Surround yourself with positive people

People who struggle with low self-esteem tend to care about what other people think. This damages your state of mind and personal wellbeing. Some people can make you feel better than others. Think about it. If you’re surrounded by people who constantly bring you down, you’re going to be affected in a negative way.

Spend time with people who make you feel good about yourself. Those mates who uplift you and empower you to do great things. Your vibe attracts your tribe. Life is too short to spend your days with negative-minded people. Build better relationships, but before doing that, build a better relationship with yourself.

5. Be yourself

There’s no point in comparing yourself to others. You were born to be you. So, own it. Challenge yourself and take risks. Focus on your goals and become the best version of yourself. We all fall short sometimes, but we don’t forget to dust ourselves off on the way up.

Life is a learning curve. Some days the way we feel about ourselves will change. No days are perfect just like nobody is perfect. Find your voice and speak it, loud and proud.
